What We Teach At Pennywell Honto Shin

KATA

The Japanese word, kata, can be roughly translated as form, a kind of shadow boxing which applies karate techniques in a series of memorized patterns. But to those who really understand kata training know that there is much more to it than that. Kata is a way of performing on your own,  a set sequence of movements and techniques that can be put into a real combat situation. Not only this, it enables the karate-ka (student) to practise stances (dachi)  Kime (focus) as well as the speed and sharpness of some techniques enabling them to fully understand the use of the techniques being applied.

KUMITE

The meaning of KUMITE in Japanese is United Hands  Kumi  ( Unite ) Te ( Hand) and it is a form of sparring in karate, one of the three main sections of karate training, along with kata and kihon. Kumite is the part of karate in which you train against an opponent, using the techniques learnt from the kihon and kata.

Kumite can be used to develop a particular technique or a skill (e.g. effectively judging and adjusting your distance from your opponent) or it can be done in competiton

Several forms of kumite include :

Gohon Kumite -  5 Step Sparring

Sanbon Kumite - 3 Step Sparring

Kihon Ippon Kumite - Basic Sparring

Kaesho Ippon Kumite - Reaction Sparring

Ju Kumite - Freestyle Sparring

SELF DEFENCE TRAINING

We teach a great deal of self defence techniques that can be used for all different types of attack or for any form of confrontation. All of the techniques derive from ancient japan that have been taught from master to student right through the ages, we also teach an array of modern and street scenario techniques that in some cases can mean the difference between life or death. We have found in the past that practising in these techniques as well as karate in general greatly increases the self confidence in people as they now know that they have the ability to handle a confrontation should it ever arise. We teach self defence techniques for both adults and children.

General Fitness Training comes comes as standard when training in karate. This is due to the very deep stances in shotokan karate and the repetitive use of kicks, punches and strikes with the arms. It is a great way to keep fit and also to increase stamina.

THROWING TECHNIQUES AND RESTRAINTS

We teach also a variety of throws, joint locking techniques and restraints also we teach kyusho( The striking of vital Pressure Points on the body that are used to disable or immobilise an attacker) .
